P. Morgan) entered the harbor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/hispanic\/1898\/guanica.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guanica<\/a> in southwest Puerto Rico and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/deaixa.net\/familias\/tng\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lieutenant-General-Nelson-Appleton-Miles-The-World-of-1898_-The-Spanish-American-War-Hispanic-Division-Library-of-Congress.pdf\">Lieutenant General Nelson Appleton Miles<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;began landing troops. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/hispanic\/1898\/wainwright.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Admiral Richard Wainwright <\/a>was the captain of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/hispanic\/1898\/gloucester.html\">U.S.S. <em>Gloucester<\/em><\/a>, the first ship to land in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/hispanic\/1898\/puertorico.html\">Puerto Rico<\/a>. <em>&nbsp;<\/em>American troops occupied the city of Ponce, and after 19 days of fighting in PuertoRico,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>August 12, 1898<\/strong> hostilities were halted on&nbsp;agreement to a peace protocol between the U.S. and Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\"><strong>7 Oct 1898<\/strong> &#8211; Death- <a href=\"https:\/\/deaixa.net\/tng2018\/getperson.php?personID=I18&amp;tree=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Francisco Alvarez Otero y Garces<\/a><br><strong>26 Oct 1898<\/strong> &#8211; Death &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/deaixa.net\/tng2018\/getperson.php?personID=I17&amp;tree=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cecilia Roman y Villanueva<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\"><strong>October 18, 1898<\/strong> &#8211; The city of San Juan was turned over to American military authorities and General John R. Brooke cabled President McKinley informing him that the occupation of the island was complete.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>December of 1898<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; the <em>Treaty of Paris<\/em> was signed, formally ending the war. Under the terms of Article IX of the Treaty of Paris, <em>Congress would determine the civil rights and political status of the people of Puerto Rico.<\/em> Thus began the U.S. Federal government\u2019s involvement in the lives of the Puerto Rican people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>April 12, 1900<\/strong><em> &#8211;<\/em>&nbsp;<em>the first Organic Act<\/em>, commonly known as <em>the Foraker Act<\/em>, entered into force establishing the parameters of a civilian government and the general Federal relationship with the island\u2019s inhabitants.
